Twilight Watch: A Conversation With Peter Facinelli
Having featured the members of Twilight’s Wolf Pack last week, VF.com is switching its allegiance to vampires. On a frigid day in New York City, I caught up with actor Peter Facinelli in between his “medical” commitments—he plays a human doctor on Showtime’s Nurse Jackie and a bloodsucking one, the 400-year-old Dr. Carlisle Cullen, in the Twilight saga—to discuss how New Moon differs from the first Twilight movie, his role as a father figure on and off the set, and what he really thinks of his fellow vampires.
As the patriarch of the Cullen clan, have you assumed a similar fatherly role with the cast?
You know, on Twilight I feel like they looked to me as the father figure, but because we became so close, I’m more of an older brother now.
Has there been a difference in the way you interact as a cast since you filmed Twilight?
Rob[ert Pattinson] has more security guards hanging around him! [Laughs] Other than that, not really. We really enjoy each other’s company, and we’ve been working so much on this movie that we really haven’t had as much time to hang out with each other. We’re putting in these long hours and then just heading home. Usually we just try to catch dinner with each other then get back up the next morning and do it all over again.
What would you say is the one major thing that has changed about your life since starting the franchise?
I’m traveling a lot more than I used to and interacting with a lot more people. The fan base on this, I don’t know how else to explain it … it’s a cultural phenomenon. People will actually hop on a plane to see you. Sometimes I do these charity events, and people fly in to come and see me. I’m just really, really impressed with [the fan] dedication to these books and to the movies. I’ve always had a fan base with the work I’ve done, but never as rabid as this.
You seem pretty dedicated to them, too, judging by your Twitter page.
You know, I love connecting with the fans because I’m a fan of the books myself. They’re all so dedicated and wonderful to me that I love to be able to give back. So if stopping for a picture or signing a book of theirs puts a smile on their face, then that makes me happy, too. I kind of go out of my way to make sure—if there are fans hanging around the set—to try to stop and say hello to them before I get in the van. It takes five minutes to make people happy. I love interacting with them.
You’ve been working steadily since your early twenties—the same age that some of the Twilight cast members are now. Have you been able to offer any advice to any of them, especially at a time when they’ve suddenly been thrust into the spotlight?
I’ve had some conversations with some of the cast about careers because I’ve been working for fifteen years. They’re just starting out with their careers, and for a lot of them this is their first big break. I think they look to me and ask, How do you sustain that? It’s still a mystery to me, too! I feel very lucky. For me it’s about longevity and not about just one movie. It’s got to be a scary time for them because this movie is giving them lots of opportunities. It’s up to them to steer this journey into a career, and not just be part of Twilight and be gone. I look at them, and it’s got to be pretty scary to have that much on their shoulders pretty quick, but I think they’re really talented, really smart, and I think that they’re going to be fine.
What has this done for your career?
I’ve done a lot of movies and different roles, and this is another role that I love to play. I look forward to continue doing a lot more. It’s definitely broadened my fan base even with my own kids. For a long time, they didn’t get to see any of the work I’ve done because of the mature content.
Have any of your daughters seen Twilight?
All three of them have seen it! They’re ages twelve, six, and three. They love it. The 12-year-old has read the first two books, so she loves the movie. My 6-year-old loves it even more; she wants to watch it all the time! Now the 3-year-old, because the 6 year-old likes it, wants to watch it all the time, too. I asked her what she liked about it and she said, “I like the scary parts.”
Have they met the cast? Did they get excited?
My kids are pretty unaffected. They don’t get too star-struck. To them it’s just “Dad’s friends,” which is kind of nice.
How does New Moon differ from Twilight?
You know, Twilight was an independent movie. It was shot very documentary style, the way Catherine [Hardwicke, Twilight’s director] shoots. It has a rawness to it, which I think is nice. New Moon’s a little bit crisper, it has a little bit more of a studio feel, but it still has that edge.
What’s it like playing the same character for three different directors?
That gets interesting. It’s exciting in one way because every director brings their own flavor to the movie. Each director’s personality is different so you kind of have to adapt to their way of working, but I’ve had really good experiences on all three. Sometimes it’s nice working with the same person over and over because there’s a familiarity, but I’m used to working with different directors. On Nurse Jackie we get different directors on each episode. I like it because they bring different ideas and make you think of things you might not have thought of before—pushing you to look at it from different angles. I think it’s harder on the directors to come in and try to make these movies as grand as Twilight was and take on the responsibility of getting the story accurate in terms of telling it from the book. Then they have a whole cast that they haven’t dealt with before, so I think it would be more daunting for the director.
You have so many new cast members coming into it, too …
Our group is such a great bunch that we’re all so welcoming. It’s like broadening your family base. With open arms, we were there waiting. They came out to dinners with us and just became part of the family.
Speaking of family, will you please give me one word to describe each of the Cullen clan actors starting with Kellan Lutz?
Ok. [Laughs] Goofy!
Nikki Reed:
Complex.
Jackson Rathbone:
Artistic.
Kristen Stewart:
Sweet.
Elizabeth Reaser:
Awesome.
Ashley Greene:
Pixie-ish, she’s like a fairy—she’s so light on her feet. Bubbly, that’s the word.
Rob Pattinson:
Mmm, Rob. Rob’s a good one. It’s hard to narrow down to one. So many words come to mind! Brooding, tortured … but he’s a good kid. What’s the word for a solidly good guy?
Solid?
Solid. He is. He’s solid.
Finally, what your word of the day?
Cold!

The dashing Twilight dad dishes on parenthood, his marriage to 90210 star Jennie Garth and his favorite NYC pizza joint. By Melissa Fleming
I felt like I was in a dream—but I wasn’t. I really was talking to Peter Facinelli, aka Dr. Carlisle Cullen from the Twilight movies. Although the series’ fans are bloodthirsty with anticipation for the November 20 release of The Twilight Saga: New Moon, the 35-year-old actor—an avid Tweeter with over 1.2 million followers, and father to three daughters with 90210's Jennie Garth—seems as calm and cool as his signature vampire character. Currently in New York shooting the second season of Showtime’s Nurse Jackie, Facinelli regularly commutes home to Los Angeles to visit his family. The strikingly handsome star took some time from his hectic coast-to-coast schedule to fill Time Out Kids in on his family, his career, his hometown (in Queens!) and, of course, the Cullens.
Will Twilight fans be surprised by New Moon? I don’t know if they’ll be surprised; I’m hoping they’ll walk out of the theater happy. I was a fan of the book and am very pleased with how the movie came out. The Cullen family isn’t featured as prominently [as in the first film]. New Moon is focused more on the werewolf side of this small town. Also, Chris Weitz directed New Moon and his vision is different from [Twilight director] Catherine Hardwicke’s. It’s not the same as Twilight, but it still has its edge.
Was it challenging to play dad to a brood of actors so close to your own age? When I first got cast I thought, I’m only about ten years older than these kids; how am I supposed to play their father? But I was more conscious of that on the first movie. Carlisle’s speech pattern and movements aren’t very contemporary, so it gives him more of a patriarchal feel.
Is the Facinelli household on Team Edward or Team Jacob? When I asked my three-year-old what she liked about Twilight she said Edward.
How has Twilight changed you? I've definitely got more people asking me to have a picture taken with them. The fan base is fantastic. They are very loyal and giving. Some people will fly in from other states just to come meet me.
Do you have a lot of moms as fans? The fans span all ages. It’s not like more of the moms like me. They love the whole Cullen family.
How do you like living in New York? It’s great! I grew up in Ozone Park, so it’s always nice to come back. I moved to L.A. in 1996 but I’ve shot a number of things here: The Big Kahuna with Kevin Spacey and Danny DeVito, Riding in Cars with Boys and now Nurse Jackie.
What are your favorite things to do with your family in the city? At Christmastime we like to see the tree at Rockefeller Center and go ice-skating in Central Park. The kids love to go shopping at FAO Schwarz, walk around the city and buy pretzels or hot nuts on the street corners.
Ever get back to Queens? A couple months ago I went to Aldo’s Pizzeria where I used to go all the time. They sponsored my baseball team when I was a kid. Aldo is still working there on Cross Bay Boulevard and still makes one of the best pizzas in New York.
What was it like growing up in Ozone Park? It was a real community. All the neighbors knew each other and watched out for one another. Fourth of July was huge. The streets would close down and fireworks would be lit off all the way down the block. I have a lot of good memories.
How do you balance family and work? Any minute I have off, I try to get home. Last year I flew into L.A. on a Friday morning, picked up my kids from school, put up the Halloween decorations, had dinner with them and got back on a plane that night to go back to film. But it was worth every minute that I got to spend with them. I try not to go more than two weeks without seeing them even if it’s only for a day. And we also have Skype. At least we get to see each other! Sometimes we’ll even eat dinner together. I’ll be eating ramen noodles and they’ll be having a wonderful home-cooked meal.
As working actors, you and Jennie both have incredibly demanding schedules. What’s the key to your successful marriage? We take it one day at a time. My theory: Don’t throw in the towel in a relationship if you’re having rocky times. You’re just going to have to start over with somebody else and then you’re going to have rocky times with them. Every time we’ve ridden through the rocky times, our love’s gotten deeper. At this point we’ve been together 15-odd years and I can't imagine trading that time for somebody else.
You and Jennie have three children, daughters Luca Bella, Lola Ray and Fiona Eve. Any plans for more? I believe the world was made for a family of five and no more. When you get in a car, you can seat five comfortably. When you go out to dinner, you can seat five comfortably. I’m from a family of six but those were different days; everyone climbed in the back of a Chrysler and your face was smashed up against the glass and nobody cared. That being said, never say never!
What do you like to do during your downtime, besides Twitter? What downtime? Any downtime I have is spent with my family, with my kids. In between one doing soccer and basketball, another doing horseback riding and the three-year-old wanting to go to the park, I don’t have a lot of downtime.
Is it true that you like to take family road trips? Yes. We take our RV to our daughter’s soccer tournaments and we drove to Portland, Oregon this past summer. I just bought a new RV the other day. We had a 33-foot and now we’ve moved up to a huge 40-foot Class A motor home. Who knows? Maybe I’m making room for one more child.
What’s up next for you, aside from the Twilight series? I’m filming Nurse Jackie through December. There’s the possibility of a fourth Twilight [film]. I’ve written three scripts and hopefully they’ll eventually get set up.
Of all the characters you’ve played, do you have a favorite? That’s like asking me to pick a favorite kid! Every one of my characters is my creation. I’ve liked them all. Dr. Cullen is a great character, but so is Dr. Cooper [from Nurse Jackie]. I love playing them both.
Απο ολη τη συνεντευξη μου εμεινε αυτο: There’s the possibility of a fourth Twilight [film]. I’ve written three scripts and hopefully they’ll eventually get set up. Aντε αποφασιστε να δουμε κ μεις μια ασπρη μερα!!!!!

How cute is this family? They are quite the showstoppers. Peter & Jennie have been married for 8 years & have 3 daughters: Luca Bella 12, Lola 7, and Fiona 3,. I think it would be too cute to see a little Carlisle running around forks! Jennie, go ahead take a chance. I know I wouldn’t stop until I produced a little PFach junior.
Looks like Daddy C may be busy while the details for Breaking Dawn are finalized. The Twilight Saga’s Patriarch Peter Facinelli & wife Jennie Garth talk to OK! magazine about their home life, & how it’s like to be the male in a house full of women.
“My wife threw me a surprise party, so that was fun,” The Twilight Saga: New Moon star tells me of his 36th birthday celebration during the Tribeca Film Institute Benefit Screening of Everybody’s Fine held this week at NYC’s AMC Lincoln Square. “She totally got me, because I wasn’t even thinking about my birthday, so it was a nice surprise.”
Bonus: New Moon co-star Kellan Lutz wished him a “happy birthday.”
“That was nice,” he says.
Meanwhile, lil’ Lola turned seven on Sunday, and her sisters Luca, 12, and Fiona, 3, were on hand to blow out the candles.
Jennie attests that the man she married in 1996 is a great dad.
“He’s very hands-on,” the actress, 37, says. “He doesn’t watch football or sports, he doesn’t drink beer. He’s not a guy’s guy in that respect. Not that he’s not a guy’s guy … that sounds bad. But I’m lucky, I’m so lucky that he doesn’t drink or sm … well, heh … he’s just a rare find, so I’m really, really lucky.”
Peter tells me “patience” is the most important thing he’s learned from his wife.
“I’m in a house full of women,” the actor, who also stars in Showtime’s Nurse Jackie, says. “To be in a house full of women – I have three daughters, and I’m surrounded by women – you need a lot of patience, I think. Maybe that’s my lesson in life – to learn patience. “
Sometimes it gets to be too much, and he just needs alone time.
Jennie says, “Sometimes I’ll hear the Harley thing rev up, and I’ll know he’s had enough estrogen for one day and he’s gotta get out of the house. There’s a lot hormones going on right now in my house.”
She adds, “I want a boy every day. Yes I do. I love them. We’re so fortunate, and I don’t ever want to push that envelope. You think, ‘I have three healthy, great kids, and I’m so lucky’ that I would be scared to have more. But I would be willing to take the risk. I do want a boy.”
The power couple make time for each other in the tub before the girls wake up.
“He loves taking a bath,” Jennie says. “I don’t really like taking a bath. I feel terrible. Because he likes the water cold, and I like it hot. It doesn’t work out. I told him I wanted to put a TV in the bathroom, and he got mad at me. He was like ‘no, that’s our time in the bathroom.’ And I was like ‘yeah, but I can watch Nurse Jackie on the TV while you’re talking.’”
Maybe they’ll get their wish and welcome a son in 2010.
''New Moon'' Star Peter Facinelli Heads Home for the Holidays
I told my wife [Beverly Hills 90210 alum Jennie Garth] the only gift I want is to be able to be with my family," Peter Facinelli recently told iVillage while filming Nurse Jackie (the Showtime drama starring Edie Falco) in New York. "I wrap up the second season today, and I head home tomorrow. I'm looking forward to a break and just spending some time with my family."
It's no surprise that the dad of three looks forward to a little downtime with his loved ones in their L.A. home. In addition to his role as Dr. Fitch Cooper on Nurse Jackie, Facinelli also plays vampire Carlisle Cullen in the blockbuster Twilight films. Anticipating his holiday break, the 36-year-old took a moment to chat about a beloved Christmas tradition, New Moon fan requests and why he's in favor of a fifth Twilight movie.
The Twilight Saga has such a huge fan base. Has the experience been crazy so far? I'm a fan of the books, too, so I understand their passion for the project and the movies. And I'm excited to be a part of the franchise and be able to have a say in how it's made.
Are you constantly getting stopped on the street? It's helpful that in the movie I have blond hair and in real life I don't. I'm able to get around a little easier than some of the others. That said, the fans know me by now and what I do look like, so I do get approached quite often.
Have you had any crazy fan requests? Yeah, you get the, "Can you bite me?" a lot. Once in awhile I'll bite them on the wrist for a picture. It's fun, you know. The whole series is fun to be a part of. It's great that they're so excited about these movies. It would be worse if they were throwing tomatoes at us, you know what I mean?
Did you draw on your own fatherhood experience for your role as Carlisle Cullen? Whenever you take on a role there are things you connect with and things you have to research, and for me, being a patriarch of a family came naturally. I have a family of my own and so I understood what it was like. So it was more about working on who Carlisle was as a person and where his travels have taken him and how to get 350 years onto the screen.
Did you take on a father-figure role with your younger castmates? I think in the first movie I was more fatherly towards them, because when you meet up with the other actors you kind of see them as their characters and they take on traits of their characters. So everyone kind of fell into who they are in the family, and my role was the patriarch. But as they got to know me more, I became more like the older brother kind of figure.
Do you all really get along? We're pretty much a family on and off set. After work we enjoy each other's company. We go out to dinners. We had this experience together. There were no egos involved when we started Twilight, and there are still no egos involved, and that's kind of nice to see that people's heads haven't grown. They're still the same people we started the journey with.
What vampire superpower do you wish you had in real life? I'd love to be able to fly -- that would be cool. But I don't know if that's a vampire power. I mean, Carlisle's power is compassion, and I think I got the short end of the stick. I was like, "Can't I be compassionate and fly?" You can't really [be] like, "Stand back! I'm going to smite you with my compassion!"
Are your three daughters Twilight fans? They all are. I've got a 12-year-old [Luca Bella], a 7-year-old [Lola Ray] and a 3-year-old [Fiona Eve], and they've all seen Twilight. The 12-year-old and the 7-year-old have seen New Moon, and it's exciting to be a part of a movie that my family can actually be a part of and see.
New Moon was a little intense. Was the 7-year-old scared? No, she gets that they're movies because of what I do. She loves the movie. She was excited to be able to go to the premiere and be able to see it.
Do they think it's cool that you're a celebrity? No, because we live very down to earth... when we're at home, we're very regular people. It's not any different for them than any other upbringing. But it's kind of cool for them to be able to go to the premieres and see that and be a part of the whole Twilight Saga.
You and your wife are both famous actors. Is it hard to stay grounded in family life when you're a part of the Hollywood scene? No, because my wife comes from Illinois and I come from New York, and at the end of the day what we do is a job and not who we are as a people. I'm an actor, not a celebrity. I never walk around thinking I'm a celebrity. So, in that sense, we really do live a grounded lifestyle. And I wouldn't want it any other way for my kids.
Do you have any plans for the holidays? I'm going to take the kids skiing.
How about any holiday traditions? We have a little village set that we put underneath the Christmas tree, and this year the kids got to build it themselves because I was out of town. Usually I help, but this year they kind of surprised me and did the whole village under the tree. It was kind of fun to come home and see that they had done it by themselves.
Do you have a New Year's resolution for 2010? I don't make New Year's resolutions anymore because they always get broken. I also feel like if you want to change your life, there's no time like the present. So why wait for a certain date, you know what I mean?
There's been talk about the last Twilight book, Breaking Dawn, being split into two separate films. Can you confirm the rumors? I don't know. I know there are rumors. I'm in support of it. It's a very thick book and there's a lot going on. To scale it down to one, we would miss a lot of stuff. So, if I had a say, I would love for it to be two. That said, I haven't heard anything about it, nor has Breaking Dawn been confirmed at all. So I think we're all just waiting to hear what someone decides to do.
So you're not itching for it to be over? No, I'm a big fan of the books. So for me, it's fun to be able to revisit Carlisle and I'm quite saddened that there's only one more book to do. It would be great if it was broken into two.
What can fans expect from the next film, Eclipse? Every one of these has had a different director [David Slade directs The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, opening in June] so the feel's been a little bit different. Each one of the books progressively has more action. New Moon has some really cool action with the werewolves and the Volturi and it builds from there into the third one where the Cullens get to do some really great action stuff. And that's fun for me, because as a Cullen we're very reserved and always trying to fit in and look humanlike. But in Eclipse, you get to see what we're capable of as vampires.
Who would win in a fight between Taylor Lautner and Robert Pattinson? In real life? Well I'd have to go Taylor all the way on that one, just because he's been taking karate since he was in his mother's womb. And I've seen him do some back flips and some high kicks. I think that Taylor would win the fight between him and me, too.
Alright, give us the scoop. Are Rob and Kristen Stewart dating? You know, I don't know who my costars are dating, and I don’t ask. I mean, I don't know who Edie Falco is dating either.
Do you get tired of people asking you that? Yeah, I get tired of people asking me who Edie Falco is dating all the time!
